11 Inspirational Sugar Skull Designs

by julianne

My sister asked me to design a black and white sugar skull tattoo for her and this was what I came up with. I am pleased with my design, but I would really like to do another one in full colour, just because I love anything colourful.

Before starting her design, I looked for inspiration in various other pieces of art based on skulls or the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ celebration. I have listed my favourites below.

Day Out In Coventry

by julianne

Onbarbie-car-2 Easter Monday, we decided to visit the Transport Museum in Coventry. It was a really good day out and I would definitely recommend it, especially if you’ve got a budget. The Transport Museum is free to visit and there are lots of interesting things to see.

The first thing that we came across was a special exhibition of royal cars to commemorate the Jubilee this year. As we progressed through the museum, the cars gradually got more modern. We also entered the “Blitz Experience”, which was quite interesting as Coventry was one of the cities that was pretty much flattened during World War 2. We also saw Thrust SSC, which currently holds the land speed record. It was fascinating to hear about how public donations were needed in order to achieve that world record. painting-3

In the final exhibition were several of the curators’ favourite cars, including the DeLorean and the original full-sized Barbie Jaguar. Also in this exhibition were paintings by Ian Cook of PopBang Colour. His paintings are amazing! He combines his passion for art and his passion for cars to create these phenomenal paintings using RC cars. The effect this creates is fantastic.

squirrel-2After leaving the Transport Museum, we ventured into Coventry, a city full of 60s and 70s architecture. However, we came across the ruined cathedral that was bombed during the 2nd World War. It is a beautiful ruin and within the gardens, we found some very confident and playful squirrels. More of my photographs can be seen in my gallery.

Our final stop of the day was the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. Although this was quite a rushed visit, as they were about to close, there were some interesting and unique pieces of art as well as more traditional pieces. Before leaving, I bought a souvenir from the gift shop – a cute camera case that I could not resist. ^_^

“in our dreams, anything is possible…”

by julianne

dream-11On Saturday 7th April, 2012, Tom and I set off on a road trip to St. Helens, Merseyside, to see the unique piece of public art known as ‘The Dream’.

It is an astonishing 20m high sculpture of a girl’s head. The girl has her eyes closed and is in a, seemingly, dream-like state. The unusual proportion can play tricks on your eyes, often making it seem as though it has been edited into photographs.

The artwork is by Jaume Plensa and was commissioned to pay tribute to the history of coal-mining in St. Helens and also to symbolise the post-industrial transformation of the area.  The notion behind the piece is “in our dreams, anything is possible…”.

Plensa says, “Despite her wonderful vantage point and view, the girl’s eyes are closed, looking inward. This is in part my homage to the miners and their dream of light when underground.”dream-6

I would highly recommend visiting ‘The Dream’. It is a fascinating piece of art and totally unique. More of my pictures can be seen in the photography gallery.
